The Fabulous Moolah & Penny Banner

Women's Wrestling Legends — Original Ditch-Cat Photo Print

The Bios

Mary Lillian Ellison — better known as The Fabulous Moolah — began her career working alongside "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers as a ringside valet before reinventing herself as the most dominant women's wrestler who ever lived. She won the NWA World Women's Championship in 1956 and was the most prominent holder of the title for 28 years — marketed by the WWF as the longest reigning champion in the history of any professional sport. In 1956, she outlasted 12 other competitors in a battle royal to win the vacant Women's Championship, then held the title for the next decade without losing it. Moolah was also the first woman ever allowed to wrestle at the historic Madison Square Garden. She became the first woman inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1995 and is also a member of the NWA Hall of Fame and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. She passed away on November 2, 2007. Mary Ann Kostecki — known in the ring as Penny Banner — was an American professional wrestler and pioneer in women's wrestling who competed from 1954 to 1977, leveraging her judo skills to become one of the sport's most accomplished performers. Her path into wrestling is the stuff of legend: NWA president Sam Muchnick spotted her working as a cocktail waitress in St. Louis, bet her she couldn't do 200 sit-ups, and after she knocked them out without breaking a sweat, the phone calls started coming. She achieved her greatest success as the inaugural AWA World Women's Champion in 1961 and captured the NWA World Women's Tag Team Championship three times. In her last twenty years of wrestling, Banner was defeated only twice — once by Moolah and once by Belle Starr, both of whom used the ropes for leverage. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame called her one of the finest women wrestlers of all time. She passed away on May 12, 2008, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bleacher Report + 4
