"Chief" Wahoo McDaniel & Announcer Bob Caudle

Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling — Original Ditch-Cat Photo Print

The Bios

Edward "Wahoo" McDaniel was a Choctaw-Chickasaw Native American who achieved fame first as a professional football player and then as one of the most beloved and hard-hitting wrestlers in the history of the National Wrestling Alliance. Before he ever stepped into a wrestling ring full-time, McDaniel played linebacker for the Houston Oilers, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and Miami Dolphins — a bruising athlete who carried that same physicality into every match he ever worked. FandomFandom

He spent the most time wrestling for Jim Crockett Promotions out of Charlotte, N.C., where he held the NWA U.S. title five times — tying the record with Ric Flair — and was a four-time Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion. His battles with Johnny Valentine were legendary for their ferocity, and Valentine was far from the only opponent whose chest was worked over by the Chief's devastating knife-edge chops. Wahoo was voted Pro Wrestling Illustrated's Most Popular Wrestler of the Year in 1976 and was eventually inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, NWA Hall of Fame, and WCW Hall of Fame. He passed away on April 18, 2002 at the age of 63. Kayfabememories + 2

Bob Caudle was the unmistakable voice of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling — the man who made every title match feel like the most important event in the world. Known for his warm, authoritative delivery and his trademark greeting "Hello wrestling fans..." and sign-off "So long for now," Caudle spent decades as the broadcast anchor of Jim Crockett Promotions, interviewing the biggest names in the territory from ringside. He passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at age 95 — one of the last living voices of the golden era of Southern wrestling.

This photograph captures Wahoo in full headdress — larger than life — with Bob Caudle at his side, a moment frozen in time from the heart of Mid-Atlantic wrestling history. An original Ditch-Cat Photo print, straight from the negative.
